TK-22 Changing Metering Needles

Note: Japanese bikes almost always use JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screw heads, and NOT Philips heads. Make sure to use JIS screwdrivers or some equivalent to remove these cross-head screws. Using a plain Philips screwdriver will result in damage to the screw head, even if it can be removed. JIS screwdrivers can be easily found on the internet. There are also ways to make Philips screwdrivers more usable on JIS screws. The issue is the taper within the cross. Since they are different, the Philips drivers deform the JIS screws. This makes them more likely to strip in the future.

Making changes to the jet needle can be done relatively easily without removing the carbs from the bike. However, removing the slide retainer from the slide is a little tricky.

The first step is to remove the screw holding the slide arm to the throttle shaft.

The screw is often very tight from the factory. The real problem is the fact that the screw is not a standard philips screw. It is a JIS type screw. Using a standard philips screwdriver will usually result in the screw head deforming. An impact wrench may help extract the screws, but be careful not to damage the throttle shaft. It is not fully supported in the rack, and can bend.

Once the slide arm screw is out, the next step is to remove the two screws holding the slide retainer to the slide. The screws are situated in a seemingly impossible area to get to with a screwdriver. The key is to get just the right screwdriver. It should be long and skinny, and preferably a blade type for the initial turn. These screws can take a blade screwdriver or a small JIS driver. The blade type will do less damage if a JIS driver is not available.

The two screws must be accessed in different manners. The first screw should be accessed with the slide in the down position.

The arm is curved just enough to allow a scredriver into the slide to access the screw.

The second screw must be accessed with the slide raised nearly to the top of the carb body. The slide should be held up securely in order to press down on the screw head firmly.

With the slide all the way up, it's easy to access the second screw.

There should be no reason to dissassemble the arm mechanism. It has several small parts and springs that like to shoot out and disappear.

When re-assembling the slide retainers, it may be beneficial to use a tiny bit of silver antiseize.
